- Incandescent lights – considered the original black light, incandescent lights use a filter to block most of the visible light, allowing only infrared and UV-A light to pass through. - LED lights – with the recent advancements in the lighting industry, UV LED lights are increasingly becoming the best option for black light as compared to fluorescent tubes. This is due to their higher efficiency which is around 1.5 to 3x compared to that of fluorescent, longer lifespans, and the absence of mercury or any hazardous material. Apart from that, they’re also a bit more affordable.
2. The specific wavelength you need
Generally, black lights that emit a shorter wavelength are more expensive. Most blacklight applications use a narrow range of UV radiation (around 340-400 nm) in order to produce fluorescence effects. However, even within that range, various wavelengths could end up creating either a strong or weak effect.
Therefore, you want to go for a black light with a wavelength of 365 nm to achieve maximum fluorescence effects without having to pay more.
As mentioned, the prices of a black light will vary depending on its wavelength and type. In general, fluorescent and incandescent lights are the cheaper option. However, the problem is that they don’t last long and aren’t really that efficient in terms of black light application.
